DriveDx for Mac: How to Detect and Prevent Drive Failures Before They Happen
DriveDx: A Free and Powerful Tool to Check Your Mac's Drive Health
If you own a Mac, you probably store a lot of important data on your internal or external drives, such as photos, music, documents, and more. But do you know how healthy your drives are? Do you know if they are about to fail or have any problems that could affect their performance or reliability?

Fortunately, there is a free and powerful tool that can help you check your Mac's drive health and prevent data loss and downtime. It's called DriveDx, and it's an advanced drive-health diagnostic and monitoring utility that works with both SSDs and HDDs. Unlike most drive utilities, DriveDx not only monitors the drives built-in S.M.A.R.T. status, but also analyzes the changes of all drive health indicators that are closely related to SSD or HDD failures (like SSD wear out / endurance, reallocated bad sectors, offline bad sectors, pending sectors, I/O errors, and more) and alerts the user immediately if anything goes wrong.
In this article, we will show you how to download and install DriveDx on your Mac, how to use it to monitor and diagnose your drive health, and how to use it to prevent data loss and drive failure. Let's get started!
How to download and install DriveDx on your Mac
DriveDx is compatible with macOS 10.9 Mavericks or later, including macOS Ventura. It supports modern SSDs and HDDs from various manufacturers. To download and install DriveDx on your Mac, follow these steps:
Go to and click on the Download button.
Open the downloaded file (DriveDx.dmg) and drag the DriveDx app to the Applications folder.
Launch the DriveDx app from the Applications folder or the Launchpad.
Agree to the license agreement and enter your administrator password if prompted.
If you want to monitor external drives (such as USB or Thunderbolt drives), you will need to install a special driver called SAT SMART Driver. To do this, go to the DriveDx menu bar and select Install SAT SMART Driver. Follow the instructions on the screen and restart your Mac when done.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed DriveDx on your Mac. Now you can start using it to check your drive health.

The main window: Overview, Health, Performance, Errors, and Self-tests tabs
The main window of DriveDx shows you a list of all the drives connected to your Mac. You can select any drive from the list to see more details about it. There are five tabs at the top of the window that let you access different aspects of your drive health:
Overview: This tab shows you a summary of your drive status, including its model, serial number, firmware version, capacity, temperature, power cycles, power-on hours, overall health rating, overall performance rating, and lifetime left (for SSDs). You can also see a list of key health indicators that are most relevant for your drive type (SSD or HDD).
Health: This tab shows you a detailed breakdown of your drive health indicators, such as SMART attributes, SSD lifetime, I/O errors, and more. You can see the current value, the worst value, the threshold, the raw value, and the status of each indicator. You can also see a graphical representation of the indicator history and trends. You can customize which indicators are shown and how they are sorted by clicking on the gear icon at the bottom of the tab.
Performance: This tab shows you a detailed breakdown of your drive performance indicators, such as throughput, latency, access time, and more. You can see the current value, the average value, the minimum value, the maximum value, and the status of each indicator. You can also see a graphical representation of the indicator history and trends. You can customize which indicators are shown and how they are sorted by clicking on the gear icon at the bottom of the tab.
Errors: This tab shows you a log of all the errors that occurred on your drive, such as read errors, write errors, CRC errors, command timeouts, etc. You can see the date and time, the error type, the error count, and the error description of each error. You can also filter the errors by type, severity, or date range by clicking on the filter icon at the bottom of the tab.
Self-tests: This tab shows you a list of all the self-tests that were performed on your drive, such as short self-test, extended self-test, conveyance self-test, etc. You can see the date and time, the test type, the test duration, the test result, and the test description of each test. You can also initiate a new self-test by clicking on the start self-test button at the bottom of the tab.
The status icons: OK, Warning, Failing, and Failed
DriveDx uses four status icons to indicate the overall health and performance of your drives. These icons are displayed next to each drive in the main window and in the menu bar. Here is what they mean:
OK: This icon means that your drive is healthy and performing well. No action is required.
Warning: This icon means that your drive has some issues that may affect its health or performance. You should check the details and take appropriate actions.
Failing: This icon means that your drive is in a critical condition and may fail soon. You should backup your data and replace your drive as soon as possible.
Failed: This icon means that your drive has failed and is no longer usable. You should stop using your drive and contact your drive manufacturer or service provider for assistance.
The health indicators: SMART attributes, SSD lifetime, I/O errors, etc.
DriveDx monitors various health indicators that are related to your drive's functionality and reliability. These indicators are based on different sources of information, such as SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology), SSD lifetime estimation algorithms, I/O statistics, etc. Here are some examples of health indicators that DriveDx tracks:
IndicatorDescription
Reallocated Sector CountThe number of sectors that have been remapped to spare sectors due to read/write errors or other problems.
SSD Wear Leveling CountThe number of times that data has been evenly distributed across all flash memory cells to prolong SSD lifespan.
Uncorrectable Error CountThe number of errors that could not be corrected by error correction mechanisms.
Average LatencyThe average time that it takes for a data request to be completed by the drive.
Total LBAs WrittenThe total amount of data that has been written to the drive in logical block addresses (LBAs).
Total I/O ErrorsThe total number of input/output errors that occurred on the drive.
The diagnostic reports: Save, print, or
